    I have a older Grizzly G1126 that jumps from 515 to 1400 RPM with nothing in between.
    I'm looking for a good mechanical (preferably audible) edge finder that will work with these speed limits.

    I see the Brown & Sharpe at good prices, but after doing many searches on the different forums, I'm not sure about my RPM limits. (??)

    Any recommendations for an audible edge finder that's under $20, for drill/mill with the above speed limitations?

    I have a number of the Fisher ones and would highly recommend them. They list a max speed of 1500 depending on shank size:

      I would definitely second the Fisher Machine edge finders. The quality is great. Order one from on another board and bought two others styles from him I liked it so much. He is one of the few people offering a quality 1/4 shank model (reduced shank).

        According to Grizzly's manual you should have spindle speeds of 65, 130,220,480,926, and 1550 rpm. Sounds like you have a machine problem.

          Not on his site but Fisher has one called the big jump. It is FANTASTIC! I think it is $17 +- It is my go to edgefinder.

                No ... it's the older version of the G1126.
                It has 105, 300, 390, 515, 1400, and 1820.
                I like the higher top end, but the jump from 515 to 1400 ..... not so much.
                May be time for VFD .........

                    Speed is not critical with an edge finder. Running faster may result in a crisper kickout but it is primarily personal preference. 1500 would not be too fast in my experience but I would stop there.
                    I once loaned my Starrett edgefinder to a co worker who put it a VMC spindle and turned it on manually. Since he did not enter a speed it started at the last speed command, 4600 rpm. Edge finder sounded like a shotgun blast. We found all the parts, put it back together and it's still good for .0002. Just lucky I guess.

                      Yes ... I'm starting to get a feel that the ubiquitous use of the term '1K' is not the max, and that the Fisher list speeds up to 1500 for shafts 1/2 and under, with the max of 1K for the 3/4".

                      I had tried to use a wiggler when I first bought this mill/drill (about 9 year ago) but got mixed results.
                      Over the years I found I wasn't using my mill/drill for much of anything that I couldn't just clamp the work piece in a 6" vise and use an end mill in a drill chuck, to get the results I needed.

                      But I recently added a Sino 3 axis DRO to it, and that has prompted me to look for a better way of edge detecting. In searching about on the different forums and YouTube videos ... I could never see anything other than the 1K recommendation .... hence the question.
                      And as you might imagine ...... I really appreciate the responses!!
