  • Any suggestions on things to do in Oxnard CA?

Other than going to the Haas open house.
I am getting out of the rain in BC and taking my kid down to visit the Haas Factory next weekend.
We have some spare time and looking for things other than shopping to do. Unless its machining related ;-0
I am thinking visiting the CAF museum should make the short list.
    Thanks
    Dave

      Port Hueneme

Go visit the Naval CB base in Port Hueneme. I was stationed there in the early eighties. Point Mugu was a NAS just south of Oxnard also. We are having a reunion out there in October. I am looking forward to visiting the area again.

You could go north on the 101 to Santa Barbara, or take PCH down to Santa Monica, Oxnard really is as romantic as the name sounds.

Isn't that area home to Harbor Freight?

Yup, just over the Hill in Camarillo, made by famous by Frank Zappa and his song, "Camarillo Brillo".

I would go to the farmers market in Ventura, if its a Saturday. Buy some oranges, grown right there.
Ventura is a real town, with nice buildings and interesting people.
Oxnard is mini malls and industrial parks.

Maybe drive up to Ojai- its a pretty little town 20 minutes up in the hills, where movie stars live. When I lived there, my nearest neighbors were Malcolm Mcdowell and Mary Steenburgen- they were divorced, but live near each other so they can both see the kids.
used to see Rickie Lee Jones at the health food store...

And, if its still in business, dont miss the chile relleno buritto at Johnny's, on Ventura Ave, near the welding supply store.

I can taste one right now...

              Dave --

The Navy has a Sea Bee Museum at Port Hueneme (a name you say as if spelled Waw-nee-me), but the hours are limited and you need to make reservations ahead of time.

The Comerative Air Force's WWII aviation museum at the Camarillo Airport absolutely should make your list. Last time I was there, they had their C-46 "China Doll" open for walk-throughs, and several other planes being actively restored / maintained. There were also a couple of ex-military Lockheed Constellations (not owned by the museum) parked nearby. http://www.skytamer.com/6.1/Californ...%20Museum.html

And, whether you cared for him or not, the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley is only 30 miles or so from Oxnard and well worth visiting.

Thank you all for the suggestions.
I have been to the Naval base several years ago on business. I did not get to see the museum. It sounds the CAF is on the short list.
                Thanks

I was going to mention Port Hueneme too. I was there in the early eighties as well. You weren't in VXE-6 were you? I was in Deep Freeze. A trip out to the Channel islands might be a good side trip. They usually sail out of Ventura.
