Does anyone know how the clamping system works in one of the arms that hold a DTI? For instance a magnetic foot with the two or three arms that lock when you turn one knob.

I think there are rods in the arms that lock ball joints on the ends. The rods are moved or expanded by a wedge as you tighten the screw..

Yes, the knob pushes rods out that lock the swivel balls. There was a long thread about this long ago. Someone even posted a photo of how they worked.It's only ink and paperComment

Could it be hydraulic? I seem to have to add a little grease every now and then. Of course mine are very cheap ones from you know where. I missed the post about the rod and wedge issue.John Burchett
