  • Clarkson still in business?? (i.e. Autolock collets)

I stumbled upon a Clarkson Autolock chuck, small size collets. Can you buy new replacement collets for these anymore, or is it only the used spares on eBay? I tried google but found nothing. I could have sworn I looked up Clarkson's webpage regarding these things within the last year... false memory

There doesn't appear to be a Clarkson web site or a Crawford Collets web site now either, but this site is still listing new Clarkson collets

Thanks for the link, bollie7. It is a little unclear if that is a listing for used stock or new. Crawford Collets was enveloped by the 600Group/Pratt Burnerd, BTW: http://www.600uk.com/products/principal.asp?id=19

Clarkson themselves went under quite a long time ago, but were taken over by March Engineering, who themselves have now gone. The Clarkson tool and Cutter grinders are supported by a company called Machine Spares of Garratt Street, Brierley Hill, West Midlands, DY5 1 JU in the UK, (machinespares.net)who can supply (at a substantial cost) just about any part for the tool and cutter grinders. They do not, however, seem to support the Autolock chucks, and I'm not aware of anyone who does.

I've got some collets here that I don't use. Also some odds-and-ends assorted end mills with the threaded ends. Everything is used of course, but let me know if you are interested and I'll go do a quick inventory.

Where can you get the threaded end mills now? I haven't seen them advertised, but then I haven't been looking either.

Hmmm... I am beginning to wonder if this is something worth pursuing at all. I did come up with "Clarkson-Osborn" (?) in Canada. Apparently they still stock them. eBay turns up some cutters of unknown quality along with some nice NOS. Remember Minidisc players?? I guess Autolock went the way of those

They still make the screwed shank milling cutters according to their UK website:-

Clarkson Osborn is now owned by YG-1 a Chinese company who also own the Korloy brand..I spoke to them last week and the guy admitted that everything is imported.
We only use Clarkson Blue Wizard and Blue Merlin taps and I commented to him that I had not noticed any difference in quality or tool life and he said they have had no complaints.
I would say that unless you do seriously heavy milling there is no need to use the Clarkson Autolocks unless you get them and the cutters for next to nothing.
We have loads of Autolock chucks and collets kicking about and they are never used in cnc mills and very rarely in manual machines.
