  • Machinist IRC chat now open.

Hi. Just thought I would let people know I have opened a #Machinist IRC channel on efnet.
    irc://irc.efnet.org/machinist
If you have MIRC or similar installed the above link should work
    Alternative, theres webchat: http://chat.efnet.org:9090/?channels=%23Machinist

Once you enter the channel, Please say hello (or anything really) So that the channel will flash on peoples computers.
It also helps to stick around for a little while after saying hello.

Not as a replacement for HSM in any way, as clearly a forum is a much better place to ask questions, post projects, etc, but a place to chat/rant about daily stuff, get to know each other a little better, waste some time, Even talk about OT stuff instead of posting about it on the board.

Basic rules will be similar to HSM, non commerical/no ads/etc, Gloats welcome(But only with pictures!), No abusive attacks on other people in the channel/forum. Off topic allowed as long as its not getting in the way of on topic conversations. (Generaly I think at least 2 conversations can occure in an IRC chan at once before it gets confusing)

PS: Already asked George if he was OK with this post, He said yes. Thanks George!

I used IRC long before I ever used a web forum, but TBH they are more like social networking than useful for the retention of useful information. I wouldn't go back to using IRC now especially with the rake of security issues involved for un-witting users.

I'll not deny it has it's uses but far inferior to a properly archived forum.

Peter: Yep, Hence why I said it would be a better place for OT and 'getting to know each other' and general daily blogging. The HSM forum is the best place for questions and such because of retention.

The chat room is the best place for daily chatting/OT/etc, Because of the *lack* of retention.

      What security issues?

IRC has a long history of making life easy for hackers. Wouldn't surprise me to see some of them join this thread, in fact.

          .... Bunch of hogwash.

Yes, people can record what you say in a public chatroom! Gasp! shock! Im sure glad nobody can see what I say on this public forum! Makes me feel so secure
And omg, They can even get your IP! And with the visual basic GUI, they can track your IP address!
(Thats a CSI joke if anyone does not get it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hkDD03yeLnU )

Btw, if someone so much as links a picture to thier home server on a post, They get the IP of everyone who views that post.

And yes, Running commands/executables on your PC that randomly people tell you, is allways a bad idea. Reguardless if its IRC or HSM or any other website/chat room on earth. Same with personal information.

So. I don't get how IRC is any less secure then this forum, or any other public communication method.

Ditto on what Black Moons said. IRC is as secure/"insecure" as any other web service.
Amount of experience is in direct proportion to the value of broken equipment.

Results 1 - 10 of about 116 for irc (All of irc, any client, script, yadayada)
                Lets try a client:
                Results 1 - 2 of about 2 for mirc
Lets try popular web browsers you might be viewing HSM with.
                Results 1 - 10 of about 511 for explorer
                Results 1 - 10 of about 85 for firefox
                Results 1 - 10 of about 24 for chrome
                Etc etc.
PS: all the reports that have 2011 date on 'IRC' as the search term, basicly say something along the lines of 'Do not click on unsolicited links received in email, instant messages, web forums, or internet relay chat (IRC) channels', Or other passing mention of IRC where IRC is not actualy the vunerability.

MIRC's two results are: A: a trojan sends *messages* to people, and hopes they click the link
B: a unrelated trojan install scripts in MIRC that may execute dos attacks.

Ie: Both have nothing to do with MIRC's insecurity.
                So yes, More BS.

I will ask you to stop these attacks on my channel/IRC DP. Or at the very least, try reading URL's before you paste them here claiming they show how insecure IRC is. I have used IRC all my life, and have gotten hacked/infected exactly 0 times, Don't know anyone who has been hacked over IRC either. Can't say the same for using web browsers..

I'm not attacking your channel - you asked about security problems and I provided the answer. I work in computer security so see this stuff all the time.

Best of luck with your channel, btw. I used IRC myself for a number of years and except for some bots and channel hijackings, I enjoyed it.

you can use a web client like mibbit to protect yourself, and you might as well use freenode instead of efnet (personally, there are many reasons to hate freenode, but it is still more populated --- the emc [linux cnc] room is on freenode and has about 150 people in there on average). for freenode use webchat.freenode.net

Well im feeling a little better today so i'll be more active in the channel

However I notice all these people poping in and out without ever saying anything!

Thats not how IRC works, If you say hello, most peoples chat programs will flash. But they may not notice right away. You are generaly expected to stick around for a couple minutes and let people actualy notice as they might be webbrowseing or chating in another channel or out of the room.

Just entering a chat room typicaly makes NO notification, or every random disconnect/reconnect would be annoying.

So please, Come to the chat room, Say Hello, And stay a little while
