    Our Open Source lathe and a similar milling machine are meant to be built from only concrete and scrap. It was designed for construction in developing countries. Except for the carriage, tailstock and thread follower, we kept as close as possible to the Franklin Award winning, shell making lathe that was designed by Lucien Yeomans in 1915.

    The drawings are by an engineer named Tyler Disney, He is mine, eat your hearts out! All the drawings were done in free Sketchup and Blender.

    We did have to shrink it down a bit.

    We want your suggestions for improvement before we finish the final design. The lathe must stay build-able by a good mechanic using only a drill, regular mechanic's tools, a dial test indicator, concrete mix and a good junk pile.

    The ways and spindle are meant to be finished by the "3 rounds" method (like the 3 flats method) and the spindle bushings, flywheel/chuck backplate etc. could be made from simple automotive alloy castings machined on a "temporary" lathe made from an auto hub assembly.

    This version should weigh about 450 pounds and hopefully be comparable to a regular 8" lathe. It will swing a little over 12" so that a 4" angle grinder can be mounted on the tool post and used to re-surface clutches, flywheels and brakes in rural areas of developing countries

    The angle iron carriage shoes is not good engineering practice. Angle iron is easily available anywhere though and can be easily replaced by half round shoes lined with bearing material once the lathe is up and running. Until the shoes are replaced, the ways are easily rotated to unworn areas and the wear pads on the angle iron replaced.
