  • Dental Kiln, Any use for Heat Treating

    Been offered a dental kiln

    model
    Metromatic West Guardian Metrodent ltd

    Don't know a thing about it ..has a separate double ended pump of sorts.

    Don't know what the pump does ..it may be a vacuum pump.

    This model isn't on the web
    although the web site is there

    Cant see any knob for controlling the heat .
    although there are dials and buttons all over it...unless it hidden under a panel.

    The thing is about 2 foot high ..18 inches deep by 18 wide

    The actual chamber in it, is about 4 inches wide 4 inches high ..by 8 inches deep.

    How much power do these things use ..

    if it's going to take £10 worth of electricity just to get it up to the right heat ..i wont be interested

    Would this contraption be of any use to me ..

    The guy selling says it works ..but that's him ..he's only trying to sell it,knowing him, doubt if he's even plugged it in, to try it ..he bought it just to sell on ..that's his game.

    it's cheap at £20

    I'm pretty sure that such a kiln would be useful for heat treating steel, especially if it has an electronic controller, which it probably doesn't for the price.

    Any electric heater is going to suck the juice and depending on your price per KWH, it might be expensive to run.

    We have two and use them mainly for heat treating rocks but have them both on controllers.

      no electronics ..as in micro-electronics ..it's analogue

      i cant see it using that much power as it only has a 1.5mm cable to it ...so maybe less than 2.5 kw

        It's probably a kiln that was used with lost wax casting. The mold was heated to melt and burn of the wax replica of the tooth cap prior to putting it into a centrifugal or vacuum casting macine. It's probably good for 500 deg F.

          with it was a casting of a set of teeth that looked like it was of ceramic material.

          and i remember one of the gauges had on it a range of 2500 degrees + ..dont know weather F OR C...but it had a dial set at 1900

            What you are describing sounds like a porcelain furnace; The porcelain is built up on the gold casting, placed in the oven and under vacuum, fired, then removed and another layer of porcelain added, fired etc. till the crown is finished. it is then shaped and fired for glaze. Very high temps because you are fusing glass. Porcelain is basically just wet sand that is heated and melted to fuse to the casting which is gold strengthened with platinum and paladium. Straight gold would melt under the temperatures needed to fire the porcelain.

              Those dental furnaces are great for heat treat furnaces.

              An analog controller isn't a big deal IMHO, as long as the relays are still in good shape. I've heat treated in everything from a blacksmith forge to a PID controlled muffle furnace, and unless you're doing a high alloy tool steel like D2 where you need a long ramp and a precise soak temperature, PID is really just a luxury.

                  You can get cheap PID temperature controller on ebay for about £20

                    I just picked a ceramic kiln. It's stacked in 3 sections so you can use 1-2 or 3, they plug together & it go to 2300 deg F.

                      I used one of these for my little vulcan furnace. PID for $45. Hook it to a SSR to control the element so you dont have to listen to click-clack all the time. The controllers supports ramp/soak routines up to 30 steps.
