    I have a job to do.

    I need to turn down f436 washers that are 4.75od down to 4.375OD. I need to do 68 of these. F436 washers are hardened. Each one is .25 thick I believe.

    How would you do it?

    If hardened

    Try carbide it may be able to cut it.Use a toolpost grinder to cut it if the carbide fails to do the job.

      Stack them over a mandrel and turn between centers with carbide tooling. You could stack 8.5" worth of washers and do it in two setups.

        Hardened? I'd stack them on an arbor turned to a snug fit to the bore of the washers, and them o.d. grind them on the lathe, presuming that you don't have an o.d.grinder. No tool post grinder? Improvise. Lash up a small bench grinder or air grinder or something on the cross slide.

          I would stack them up and trim them down with a cermet insert. Hardened just means a nicer finish with a cermet.

            Can you give me a link to a an example? I have been looking for a better insert for hardend material in general. I use ccmt tooling.

              I just looked up the spec F436 washers hardness C 36- 45.
              No problem for carbide, HSS woud even do for just a few

                When I was doing that, I used a mandrel of the appropriate size, threaded the end for a nut to keep the stack tight, and went at them with carbide. My needed tolerance was only +- 2 thou so it was pretty easy. You loose the washer at each end, usually, but those can be reused on the next stack.
