    I would think the system can be used on current aircraft. It sounds like a good idea, when it works as charlz said.

    It's not looking to good for the F-35 program right now. Orders are being cancelled and unit costs are going up fast. Projected cost is such that I won't be surprised to see the program scaled back dramatically which of course will raise unit cost even higher.

    Oh, and the MiG-29 had passive IR tracking for non-radar intercepts way back in the 80's so not all of this is brand spanking new.

    Never assume your opponent is any less well armed as you are, and always strive to use your best technology.
    It doesn't eliminate suprises, but helps keep them managable.

    besides which. I think this is a step along the way of haveing a pilot-less aircraft.
