    Water has been low so we have been hitting lots of crap this year at work. Today I just so happen to pick up a few rocks and try to squeeze them between the prop and the top of the lower unit case WOT. The threaded prop nut end of the prop shaft spun .750" out. After marking it on the lathe I saw the bend went in a spiral from one end of the shaft to the other. I made 3 different bends to get it as strait as possible with my pos HF pipe bender lol. My 1.75 ton arbor couldn't even flex the 1" (I assume 4130 or the like). Not sure what OMC specs are for runout (not mentioned in my OMC shop manual) but I got it within .006" in the highest spot. All assembled and ready to go again tomorrow. Spinning the prop by hand (I know, watch the shark edges) I see no visible runout at the prop nut which is way better then it has been for the last 5 years!

    Just hope the shaft doesn't break now from being bent so much.





    This is a stainless prop 1mm thicker then normal.

    The marks on the shaft are blue sharpie marks.

        We've done the research on them, it take double the hp to get the same propulsion (much heavier) and we are constantly running over sand, rocks, gravel, mud, you name it as shallow as 1" of water. Jets don't like debris.

        The only other better option we have is an airboat but they are loud and annoying.

          Jet Drive

          I have a outboard jet drive and it is the 4WD of the boat world. It is not as efficient as a prop, but it can go places a prop wouldn't dare. Mine is a 25HP Johnson (hopped up a bit) on a 16x48 flat bottom jon. With just my scrawny behind in it I can run it through about 3" of water. Leaves and weeds are the biggest bugaboo, only locked the impeller once with sand- too little throttle in too little water. At least with leaves and weeds you can trim it up and pull them off (engine off thank you). They take some getting used to if you are jumping into one from a prop motor as they tend to slide more than steer.

          That being said, there are some knuckleheads around here that are running 200-250HP with an outboard jet and have to have lots of water to get them up on plane. Not to mention that when they get stuck, they ARE stuck because they weigh so much.

          Props are better in bigger water, but if you live where the water is thin jets are the way to go.

          Hope the bends don't cause you more headaches. Have fun.

            What about stout wooden oars and lots of galley slaves?

                This is my playground. This boat and motor setup has been in service for 11 years now and has done everything we always ask of it. We don't have many reasons to switch to anything else. We need light weight power and handling.

                    What are you measuring in this photo?



                    Seems like you couldn't get much useful info with the outer end unsupported and the splines in the chuck jaws, but maybe I'm not seeing all of the setup.

                        That is a bit deceiving. The splines end right at the jaw faces. The jaws are clamped down on a bearing surface with an aluminum shim between the jaws and the shaft. I left the end unsupported because I was marking where the shaft was bent. If I supported both ends I wouldn't have got a true marking.

                            Looks like fun! Guy won't even run wave runners/jet skis where we go because they ruin their impellers. If we had a jet on our boat I can almost guaranty it would be shot in one day.

                            The local town uses amphi vehicles.






                            When it gets real bad we use the hovercraft.
