  • Things I Learned Today

1: You can not eye something up and expect it to be spot on...
    example..
I had to cut 4 pieces of metal the same length 1 at a time
set the first piece of metal in the work vice, liked the way it came out.
Tried to eye up the other three the same way.
End result: 4 pieces of metal all at different lengths.
2: Don't try and match the length of something by eyeing it up next to it...
    example...
Took the carbide tipped insert bit out of my indexable fly cutter, had to cut the new one down (it was too long), and measured the worn out part instead of what the tool would actually hold.

    Lessons learned:
    Don't eye something up.....
    measure before you cut......

Depends on the application. I eye up cuts and holes all the time.

I have learned if you use your tools enough you will learn points and tricks with them which will allow you to eyeball things and get them within very close tolerances.

Like my horizontal bandsaw, I have the back jaw set within 1/8" of the blade so when I throw some metal in the saw I can eyeball the cut mark to around 1/8" from the jaw and get a spot on cut almost every time.

I'm afraid it's going to be a long online diary.

A thing I learned today - When your 18 year old rear projection TV finally dies you can take out one of the projection lens and it makes a great magnifying glass so you can actually see (didn't have this problem years ago) what you are trying to eyeball.
