Way Wipers

I would like to replace the wipers on my lathe. I found material from Mc Master Carr. The felt material is very dense, it is listed in their catalog as extra firm F 1 Before I order a 12 x 12 x 1/4 piece of material I will only use a small part of, I was wondering if someone knows of something that may use extra firm felt available at my local hardware store. so, does a lathe need wipers? mine (reiden) doesnt have any originally. but i have bee thinking about installing/making some, out of nylon though. any opinions?

I think they're a great idea. In addition to wiping back larger chips, they hold a great deal of lube and help keep an oil film on the ways.
