turning 1.750 coldroll

Hey guys I need to taper some cold roll 1.750 dia. I am tapering back 1 inch from the end and tapering down to 1 inch dia. on the end. How much do you guys normally take off on each pass doing this kind of operation. I am turning about 330 rpms and not getting blue chips but was wondering how some of you do this.

Lathe

Anywhere from .020 to .100 depending on the lathe and setup. If the tooling is up to it, I would run 1000 RPM or more.

How big of lathe? What kind of cutting tool?
