Try a sewing machine supply house, they were known to use some very unusual thread sizes. First one comes to mind is M J Foley, but they might have gone out of business. They also used a lot of flat head and cheesehead type of screws similar to the weapons industry. May have been some connection between the two industries. Bob.
I had some special 8-36 taps and dies made by Western Tap, and the price was quite reasonable. They were very accommodating and approachable, so everything was handled with my initial phone call. One-offs cost the most, but their specialty is small quantities - up to a dozen, I think.
