  • Another reason I like vfd drives, Safety

As you know, for Christmas my wife OK'ed the purchase of VFDs for my lathe and mill. The RPC worked fine, just was tired of hearing it run while not in use.
Well, had a crash last night on the lathe. Piece of 3" OD x 3" long pipe moved out of the chuck on a third pass. Got wedged in the tool bit. It was a nasty, ugly and instant jam.Belts didn't even slip Thank God no injures and just a minor problem with the cross slide feeling sticky. (Cross slide just needed a little readjustment and is well now.)
Any way the VFD drive caught the over current on the motor and shut down instantly. Had I still been on the RPC, the lathe would have kept on trying to run.

This never occurred to me that the over current feature probably saved me from more extensive damage on the machine and one my self.

No, They are not safety devices. but in this case it worked well for me.
