This is confusing – you are landing at LAX, then driving to Las Vegas?

I forget the name, but there is a gun store in Vegas where you can rent a machine gun by the hour and a range to shoot it at.

Other than that there's just gambling, booze, and hookers.

There used to be a Duesenberg collection on top of the Imperial Palace.

Hoover dam is just outside of Vegas, The Gun Store charges by the round but they have some nice firepower there. There's a ton to do in Vegas if you have time plenty of shows from blue man group to the multiple Circ shows.

There are 4 awesome thrill rides on top of the STRATOSPHERE.
Just ask my wife, I can still hear her screams.

I'd say that the real attraction is the area surrounding LV: stunning desert, beautiful Valley of Fire, Hoover Dam... I can guarantee you'll be astonished. There is nothing like this anywhere in Europe.

As for LV itself (the famous part of it), it's a typical example of kitsch in a large scale. IMHO, of course.

P.S. And please stay as far away from the commercial tours to the Grand Canyon as you can. They're absolutely horrible.
As for the Hoover Dam, AFAIK, they were going to close the dam for any traffic, so I'm not sure you'll be able to enjoy it the way it was possible until recently.

If you are going to Vegas, and you have any interest in guitars, there's a place called the land of 10,000 guitars. That's definitely worth checking out. If you've never been to Vegas, just hit the street and walk through the casinos, etc. I've been three times- the first time it was a gas, the second time it was fun, but by the third time it didn't interest me anymore.
I seldom do anything within the scope of logical reason and calculated cost/benefit, etc- I'm following my passion-

Drive out to the Hoover Dam and take the tour then have an Ice-cream from the kiosk by the multistory car park.

Day free go and drive through Death Valley and take some pictures.

Or carry on over the hoover dam and follow the road until you come to a sign on the right down to a boating area, and hire a boat for half a day and go up to the base of the Hoover dam.

That would be "Willow Beach". You can rent boats or take a tour on a big inflatable boat.

Also as mentioned, the gun store is a real cool place if you like that kind of thing. I rented an Uzi and a Thompson 45. Real fun stuff.

Hiking "Red Rocks" is also a nice way to spend an afternoon. I have hiked it twice and it is some of the most non-commercial fun around.

Valley of fire is a nice road trip that you can take in a couple of hours.

Hoover dam still is open to traffic, you just can't continue on to Arizona now that the bridge is built. You actually can get into Arizona when you cross the dam, you just can't go through and continue your trip into Arizona.

My wife and I have visited Vegas around 30 times and are going next month again. We rarely gamble. There is so much to do besides gambling that gambling is way down our list of things to do.

Day trips to Zion natl. park and Bryce canyon in nearby Utah are also a nice break from the hustle/bustle of Vegas.

One last thing. Rent a car. We tried going without many years ago and regretted it. Parking is free pretty much everywhere. Cabs are fairly expensive. You are likely to spend as much or more on a cab than renting a car. The city is pretty easy to navigate.

As to hookers, I am sure that there are some there even though it is illegal in Clark county. Selling booty is legal not far from Vegas though. The cards that litter the sidewalk in some places give the impression that hookers are everywhere, but they are not.

                          Enjoy your trip.

This -- LAX is in Los Angeles. While it is only a couple hundred miles away, that is still quite a difference.

I hiked Red Rock Canyon and toured the dam the last time I was there (prior to the bridge opening). Was worth the trip.

LAX the airport, or Lax the club on The Strip?

Souvenir buying, gambling, drinking, hookering, reptile hunting, dehydrating.

Lots of shows and museum type displays, dinner, gaming...pretty fun for most folks.
