What the heck is going on in the second photo?

The guy turned on the lathe and ran down to the fifth photo to get his picture taken.

It looks like some of the nastiest, stringiest material that anyone would ever want to cut. The reason the operator left the machine was because he was afraid of losing one of his body parts to the razor ribbon coming off of the lathe.

If you look closely at the second photo there is coolant running out the spigot. The machine is running and making chips. Could be a balanced turning tool or a roller box tool.Gbrit is right. Looks like razor wire and probobly just as deadly.

Nice photos. Are larger hi-res. scans available?

How did you come across them?

This and subsequent photos seems to show the "narrow gauge" rail wheels still used throughout New Zealand.

Thanks again Carl for the photos. As said before photo 2 looks like it could get nasty real fast. I guess they didn't make chip breakers back then.
