  • Off Topic Postings

I've just spent several hours emailing responses and apologies to a number of board members who have been offended by some recent posts on this bulletin board.

While I have allowed OT posts in the past, they have been reasonably presented and non-inflammatory. That's fine... they add a little flavor. When topics focus on politics, religion and war, the pot boils over. That's where we appear to be now.

In response, I've deleted the topics which have prompted this post.

In the future, please make your statements about politics, religion and war somewhere else.

Thank you all for your consideration in this matter.

    Thank you Neil...

Off topics are still good when you need help with you automobile, or stuff like that..

Politics and religion will just breed hate between members...

Thanks Neil. I have too much respect for the people here to want to know what their politics.

Yes, thank you too, I agree that politics are unhealthy for this group. Probably best no one saw the picture I posted seconds before you deleted it, so Thanks for that too.

                Thanks from here too.
I think it is a shame that you feel compelled to apologize to people who may have been offended by the beliefs of others, but it displays your determination to keep this forum dedicated to the interests of most of us.
Thanks for the forum and your efforts.

Oh, thanks, Bill! Now you did it and got my curiosity peaked. ;-)

Good move and thanks for your wisdom in this matter.

I agree with this, keep it hobby related, just wondering why some people are so quickly offended.

I'd like to thank you for this, I know you don't moderate much or harshly and that's nice as it should be up to the members of a board to self regulate the postings.
I'm personally not against OT posts if they have some slight bearing on the BBS's subject matter, it's suprising where side threads take you.
However politics and religion are always sticky subjects and as you will never manage to convert someone from their chosen path it's actually a waste of time.

I used to read rec.crafts.metalworking for quite a while but the constant bickering and bullying just got too much and I dropped it.

There are quite a few specialised subjects over on Yahoo like South Bend lathes, a Shaper group and many others but as I say these are specialised.
There seems to be about three general BBS's that cater to the home shop guy.
Chaski, Don Thomas's one at practical machinist and this one hosted by village press.
At the moment as regards content and quality this one has got to be the best bar none.

Lets take it on ourselves to keep this unique medium that we have been given for free, remember we pay nothing for this, no yearly rental, no fees, you don't even have to subscribe to the magazine.
There are plenty of Yahoo groups and news groups if you fancy a bit of senseless argument about war, religion or politics and it will be senseless as you will never win or convince anyone.
