cases shielded from the atmosphere

One of the reasons I bought the little laser cutter.
It will handle 6mm ply with no problems and even engrave on the lids etc. Pretty easy to do a sort of tabbed / dovetail joint on the corners.

Small son did a plastic box today for some electronic gismo and the fit was that good he can't get the damn thing apart again to glue it.

One of my customers buys sets of three matching cutters for a framing job, they come in a small wooden box about 5" x 4" x 1.5" with a hinged lid and catch. probably a generic Chinese box.

They go straight into racks on the 4 head router machines and they used to throw the boxes away but they now save them and I get them for small tooling like engraving cutters ER11 collets etc.

Probably got about 15? or so and one day I'll bash a simple set of shelves up just to hold these boxes to keep them neat instead of stacking them and knocking them over when I want the bottom box



Years ago used to have some small plastic boxes that lace knitting needles came in but time makes these brittle and they suffer.
Nottingham and surrounding areas was the worlds largest lace producing area, literally 1000's of companies and you could get these boxes by the sackful just for asking.
I probably have less than 30 left now.

I had Kennedy's but swapped all but the roll-around out for wooden. The old wooden ones seem to have so much history in them. When I look at an old greasy, oily wooden chest, I see a guy who probably bought it 50-60 years ago, when he was first starting out, kept it for his whole career, using it every day. It was such a part of his life, that it is almost like an autobiography - if only they could speak....

The wooden boxes of all ages have a certain character that steel cabinets never have .

I find that in a work enviroment with different people using the tools and not being as careful as most here seem to be the steel ones are the only way to go .

Another thing is the heat here tends to make the glue in wooden boxes and cabinets dry out and release .

Like 37-43 decrees Celcius or higher if the shop is closed and I am working away.

But I still like the old boxes which everyone have collected , may the memories never be lost .
