  • Not OT - Idea for new web site

After seeing duckman's post about an engineering show, I went looking to see if there was one place on the net I could see a schedule of shows. Couldn't find one. So I'm thinking of putting one together.

No charge to list your event. If it looks like its going somewhere, throw a few google ads around edges to try to cover overhead. Don't limit it to model engineering. Include the railroad guys, the aircraft guys, the car guys.

You think it would get used?

    Thanks.

    Bill

    Great idea!

Seems like an idea to me. There are often "local" lists of events but for someone who is traveling and wants to hit some shows a bit further away it would be nice to have a single repository of information...

Just an idea of something like you're proposing. Check out fly-ins.com. You can input what area, type of event, etc & get an e-mal about once a week with events. It's free & works great!

Exactly. How many times have we seen guys post on the forum "I'm going to be 'here' next week, what's there to do?"

I thought about the email alerts. If the site takes off, I would add that feature later. Wonder if I could borrow the first two lines of their disclaimer?

This is the site I built for the local SCCA chapter. http://www.sowela-scca.org What I'm thinking of is something similar to the right hand side of the home page. You send me your events, I load them into the database, they fall off the page when they've passed. Send me your group's name, a link to the groups web site, the event name, a link to the event web page or flyer, the date, any misc info. Keeping it simple to start off with.

edit: Oops...Location and link to locations web site. Got to know where.

With all the travelling I've been doing over the last while, an international calendar of shows would be invaluable to me.

Sadly, PMs I've sent inquiring about shows in assorted countries have gone ignored and doing searches has been a frustrating exercise to say the least.

That's kind of my worry. If they don't care enough to answer a PM, would they care enough to submit it to a web site?

                Still thinking it over...

To be fair, I've been PMing members here about shows in their backyards, not the show's organizers...

For example, I don't know enough about the HSM/modellers network (if there is one) here in Turkey to know if there are any shows...
Nor when the supposedly very active modeller community in England might be having a show or run day (I have been laying over in London on flights back to Canuckland)... Nor Germany (Frankfurt is an alternate routing with a layover I could easily extend for an event)

To be fair, the PM's inquiries have been to board members here who are attendees and exhibitrors, not show organizers.
