  • Anyone know what these plastic caps are called and where I can get them?

    Hi Folks -
There are two of these little creatures that were pushed into the allen head tops on a lathe that I am restoring and they are pretty beat up. I have been searching through McMaster etc. for some replacements but perhaps I am using the wrong terms.

Anyone know what they might be "officially" called and where I might be able to get some replacements?

    Thanks !
    Lewis

I googled "allen head screw covers"and found many options.
Here is one that has many options.

"Cover Caps for Socket Head Caps Screws" at MiSUMi USA

"Cover Cap for Socket Head" in metric at TPA. Note that there is some confusion
on their website - the page shows both Cover Caps (SCC) and Hexagon Cover
Caps (SCH - for hex caps and nuts). This .pdf shows the two series on one pg.
        Pricey at $1 - $2 ea.

The "Hex Hider" line-up at Ark-Plas MIGHT include the style you are seeking

Surprisingly, Spaenaur does NOT seem to have them, although they list
"Decorative Cover Caps" starting on pg 1059 of their catalog.

Another vendor with a variety of decorative caps for fasteners, apparently just
not the ones you want is Pro-Dec.

        .

Thanks for the tips ! I'll start digging into them to see if I can find a close match. The ones that I have are the same OD as the head of the allen bolt, and that might make it a little rare, but one could always take a larger one and file/sand it down I suppose.

          Cheers,
          Lewis

It looks like there are letters embossed on the circumference of the underside of
the cap shown. What do the letters spell out?

            .

I'll check that out when I get home tonight and let you know. I never noticed them at the time (must not have had the reading glasses on !)

The letters spell out "PAT. APP. FOR" - !! Not much use there. There's no other markings anywhere on them either.
I'll just have to take some detailed measurements and start comparing to the items referenced above, to see if I can find a match.
                Cheers,
