  • Making an End Mill Sharpener

    I am considering turning the following valve re-facer into an end mill sharpener, any thoughts?

    Hi,

    Well, you can use the wheelhead possibly. But I prefer the Darex style of endmill sharpener over end grind styles. Cup wheels may or may not be available that can fit the spindles. So you may wish to investigate that issue.

    Still, it is a start with the wheelhead for certain and the at this point the possibilities are very open.

      Good point on cup wheels dalee. Thanks and ill check that. I know air bearings and stuff are nice but i cant afford the nice stuff. So itd be a ball bearing.

        You will need a method of tilting the workhead to get the primary and secondary angles.
        One problem may be that when tilted to the primary angle which can be between 20 and 30 degrees, the end of the tool is too high to reach the wheel.

        At least the workhead is on the left hand side which is right for milling cutters.

        It's one reason that the so called "Universal" Tool and Cutter Grinders from China cannot do end mills correctly because the workhead is on the right hand side.

          Tilting of the workhead is posing my biggest challenge so far i think. I may have to make a base for it to sit on. But i have to keep height in mind also.

            Sept.-Oct. '87 and Nov.-Dec. '87 HSM contain instructions for building an air bearing spindle for endmill grinding made from an import spin-index.

              I have seen those grinders go for some serious cash..... if you don't use it for valves, maybe you can sell it and get a grinder that WILL do what you want.

                Hi,

                This is why I like the Darex type grinders. They do not tilt the workhead. But rather tilt a stylus that allows the endmill rotate a bit more to provide the clearance grind. A much, much easier proposition.

                Oh you can "tip" the work spindle to grind the proper angles on the ends, but unless you do a lot of plunge milling with center cutting end mills, you seldom need to be overly concerned with that ability. Since face milling, slotting, and side milling all cut on the periphery.

                    Jtiers i have 3 of them and ive had one on craigslist for $350-400 fir almost a year so i thought maybe id turn one into a sharpener. I do have some nice suckers though lol
