  • A little gloat

A nice gentleman dropped this off last night.

It's not going to take long to earn back the £50 it cost me!

OK I'll bite, what does it do? Looks like it would make a great "fish shocker" like you make out of a magneto?

My WAG: A small crucible goes in the center and it's used to melt small amounts of metal, maybe for a jeweler. The same way an induction cooktop works.

              Miniature "Philadelphia Experiment"?

Or maybe you can use it to make a microscopic Black Hole that will then grow until it eats the earth. But I don't understand the money angle on that.

Of course my first reaction was

"Yeah I'd want to clean that up before screwing it in to the hole in my chest."

He's going to create a-"microscopic Black Hole that will then grow until it eats the earth"-unless we pay him $50,000,000,000 Muhuhahahahahahaha....

Does it have something to do with motorbike alternators?

It is indeed an alternator re-magnetiser. It was probably made by Ducati Elettronica, who supplied the ignition and charging system for the Morini V-twins amongst others.

A former Morini owner offered it via the club and I struck like a snake.

I take it the Morini has an annular magnet ? That spins around a the stator ? The on-bike set up has ti be much the same as what I'm looking at, doesn't it ?

I'm used to Triumphs with an annular stator and a solid magnetic rotor.

I don't suppose it'll remagnetise the dial indicator stand base I wrecked the other day ?

Pretty close, yes. There are five charging coils (single phase centre tapped) and one ignition coil (300v+). The magnets don't last well if the rotor is off the bike, has got very hot, or the bike has stood for a long time with the rotor in just the wrong position.

I've got a seriously toasted alternator of a Triumph Daytona race bike on the bench. It was only about a month old. I'm going to see if I can rewind it for my friend.

With the right pole piece attached it would. Gingery did a book on building a magnetiser, they're quite simple.
