  • Refurbishing Files

Many years ago I worked for a firm where we used to immerse dull files in an acid solution to etch the edge back on them and it worked very well. I have many files that are now needing treatment and cannot remember the formular does anyone know? David

I've restored rusty files with household white vinegar.

      Here's a method using vinegar: http://www.handgunsandammunition.com...ing-files.html

If you Google "sharpening files acid" you'll get a lot of hits. Some of the methods use nitric and/or sulfuric acid which can be quite nasty if accidentally spilled on ones skin.

Also leaving them outside in the rain to rust a little will sharpen them up. The files really dont get dull, the sharp edges of the teeth get flattened during use, acid eats it away, or rust as is is just another form of corrosion.

I posted some info on this several years ago. Muratic acid works great. It restores the files to almost like new if you can deal with the discoloration.
