  • OT: Key loggers/spyware

Ok so I play a online game that you have to pay into for premium content.

Been using it for two years, recently game was bought by a Chinese company. Service has been good up until today.

I bought a certain piece of content, within a half hour 22 charges were made against my account by another gaming company, one that is a sister-company of "PW Entertainment."

PW claims that their website and CC processor is "totally unhackable" they use the LATEST AND GREATEST encryption technology and hack prevention on the market. Furthermore! Just because the "attacking" company is a chinese language website doesn't mean they are associated with PW in ANY way. That's despite them being know in the game community as PW Entertainment's lower-end market game-site.

At this point they suggest that I have keylogger software installed on my computer, that my computer is the source of the problem not the MIGHTY PW WEBSITE (which they insist is UNHACKABLE again at this point.) CLEARLY my computer is infected with an undetectable-by-normal-means keylogger or redirect and this is the root of the problem not the UNHACKABLE PW WEBSITE (again they mention this.)

    So.

How do I scan my computer for invisible undetectable keyloggers or redirect software?

I've run Adaware, Spybot, my standard AVAST! antivirus, Windows Defender, Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, and the standard "In THE NAME OF BABY JESUS EVIL PROGRAM COME OUT" faith-healing routine.

    Suggestions?

Buying online porn is always risky.

Seriously, I'd suspect a glitch in their billing software if the only purchases are coming from one company that is related to the one you do business with.

"Invisible' infections hide by subverting the operating system so the OS itself can not see the bad files. The best way to detect 'invisible' infections is to use a bootable disk with rescue software on it. one such free tool (from a reputable source) is http://www.avg.com/ww-en/avg-rescue-cd

    Good luck.

Your screen name suggests the opposite.

Maybe I should change my name to Stroke Sander.

Had to change my name from Grind Bastard because some local rock band had dibs on the name. True story.

And honestly, if you PAY for porn you're doing it wrong. If you MUST have porn there is plenty out there for free.

Or ya know... go out and find a real human being to interact with.

Now back on topic: Invisible undetectable hack-ware and Chinese corporations claiming they are utterly unhackable.

You just reminded me of this old joke.

One day Pinocchio came to Gepetto with a problem.

"Every time I have sex with my girlfriend, she gets splinters. What can I do about this?"

"Have you tried sandpaper?" Pinocchio hadn't, so he went to try it.

"Pinnochio," said Gepetto a few weeks later. "How is the problem working out with your girlfriend?"

"Girlfriend?" said Pinnochio. "Who needs a girlfriend when you have sandpaper?"

                Nothing is "unhackable".
To claim so is either marketing hyperbole or strong evidence of having only two active brain cells.

Many of the anti-virus programs will not find a root kit virus and there are a couple of special programs to look for these. Have you checked that?

                    '

Perfect World Entertainment is a perfect example of a large faceless Asian Corporation that believes that it is the center of the universe and can do no wrong.

There have been other reports from the playerbase of bank account activity... almost exactly like the one I deflected. PWE issued a statement in game that there is NO WAY AT ALL that their website or credit-card service is at fault, we all must have invisible undetectable keyloggers or other such unseen spyware. After all PWE invest in the most advanced encryption and anti-hack measures that exist today! When I logged out this morning we were up to 52 reports.
