Zamak casting/plating ??s

Hello All,

Previous plating/anodizing thread got me wondering. I'm thinking I need to cast a door handle or 2 for an old Jeep top. 2 questions:

1. Has anyone sand cast or used Zamak-5 (4% alum, 1% cu) in a gravity mold? Its for die casting I know, but I'd need to just pour it.

2. I'll want to have the handles chrome plated. Will ZA-8 plate just as easily, and will it pour noticeably better?

If you have the capabilities I'd go for aluminum rather than zinc-aluminum. For a smoother finish check out lost wax casting instead of sand casting. This should also give you something that would be easier to have plated.

I can pour them in aluminum, but thought it was more difficult to plate. No?

Guess I should move ahead by contacting a plating firm.
