    Soft Jaw applications ?

A machinist showed my how he used soft jaws. He had to cut internal grooves inside bearing shells of 40, 60 and 80mm. He machined the jaws on his 3 jaw chuck so it functioned similar to a collet chuck. Each of the shells would fit in the exact same location each time. He could machine grooves in 100s in day.
I thought this was very clever.

What other ways can soft jaws be used ?

I bored soft jaws to fit turret lathe hard collet pads ,then I could use the pads to hold square and hex stock. You just have to bore the jaws to od of the collet pads and
bore an undercut to locate the pads then drill a cross hole to bolt jaws in place. You can also use serrated collet pads in the jaws for a better grip.

Your friends use of soft jaws illustrates an ideal application of their use.
repeatable, accurate holding of parts without marring or deformation by
the chuck jaws and clamping pressure.
I use AL soft jaws to accurately and securely hold gears by the OD for
facing and boring without risk of damage to the gear teeth by the chuck jaws.
They are my "go to" anytime I need to turn multiples of the same part,
need or want it done with collet like accuracy,
if the work is thin, delicate, or hard to hold, and I want to hold the part
without marring, or damage or deformation caused by conventional jaws
      or clamping pressure.

I cut it twice, and it's still too short!

Thanks for the replies. I thought this thread would get more mileage. Maybe Soft Jaw usage is not common. Some of gator chucks can be purchased with complete soft jaws, not just jaws which bolt to the top of the master jaws. Useful to know.
