  • Some kind of fittings, 1 1/8" brass hex stock.
Face, turn OD, drill and bore to .906" X .700 deep, thread 1 1/8-24 and part off. 175 parts.

5 tools in a 4 position turret, the drill and boring bar are ganged in 1 holder. If my employer were to invest in suitable tooling I could gang all 5 tools in 1 turret position for such a small part with no tool indexing.

    • Thought you'd missed with the boring bar until I spotted the ganged tooling - I blame it on the small screen When that boring bar did hit though, I thought you'd got a lathe to dial-up to the internet!

I cut it off twice; it's still too short

          • Cast iron rollers for an unknown use.
8" OD X 4" long with 1.437" +.005 -.000 through bores, cast iron is nasty as it leaves small chips and dust everywhere, flood coolant helps keep the dust and chips in the enclosure.

As side note this machine has a 4 position horizontal automatic tool turret (never buy a CNC lathe with a horizontal turret) and crashed a 1/2" twist drill into the sliding door, no harm done fortunately.

            • I machined a 0-80 socket (Allen) head screw. I need a bunch of these for my current model engine build in different lengths. The internal hex is .050 across the flats and was produced with a shop made broach. The head diameter is .095 with a height of .055. It was blackened with oil. This was produced to proof the tooling and methods.

I apologize for the poor photos. Items this small are to difficult to photograph with an IPhone.

Surely these are available off the shelf?

                  Yes, they are...

For many years hobbyists and engineers have relied on Micro Fasteners' inventory of affordably priced socket screws, machine screws, locknuts, washers, sheet metal or self tapping screws, wood screws, other fasteners and related items in U.S. and metric sizes.

                  • Of course they are, what fun is that? I can’t buy them locally and I don’t really buy things online. A big reason to make them is that the hex is centered. Commercially made socket heads are not always centered. Now I have the ability to make any type of screw that I may need. I can make any combination of features to produce odd screws.

                    • Suit yourself. It would take me at least 30 minutes to setup, make one screw, and clean up. Even longer with black oxide. I can buy them for less than 10 cents a piece depending on length. So I would never make those, but you do you.

                      • There will never be enough time for me to finish all my projects. So I really have to be careful how I spend my shop time.

I am reminded of a quote from Warren Beatty, playing Bugsy Segal: "Time's a bitch when you take it for granted."

                        • Cripes , I’d lose those 0-80 screws faster than I could ever make them. I’m impressed!

                            • I'd ruin 5 attempts at making that screw while going blind, get pizzed and say effit and click some buy a glob button.

                              Admire your tenacity.
