Good Reference On Motors

After reading the latest thread on motors and recalling a lot more of them in the past, I come to the conclusion that I need to do some reading on motors of all sorts. Can anybody suggest either an on-line explanation of motor theory that covers the various types of AD and DC motors or a good book on them? Or really, one of each.

They should include the basic characteristics as well as basic and advanced power configurations and speed controls.

I have "Electric Motor Repair third edition by Robert Rosenberg and Agust Hand. I find it very informative

I also have an older copy of "Electric Motor Repair" by Robert Rosenberg, it is pretty much an industry standard, and goes into re-winding also.
The older copy does not go into P.M. motors but covers wound AC & DC motors thoroughly.

I have Electric Motor Repair by Rosenberg as well. The best reference book I have found. Bought an older edition as I wanted one that would cover Repulsion/Induction motors and two phase motors as well. Yes, 2 phase, common in : Camden, NJ; Philly, Pa.; Niagara Falls region, not single phase or three phase.
On the other hand bought the Audels: Elctric Motor book first, total waste of money, terrible in comparison.

Why is it so hard to believe the existence of 2 phase power? Most single phase induction motors are 2 phase. The start winding is 90deg out of phase with the run winding. There are also 2 phase steppers and also 5 phase steppers. "Delmar's standard textbook of electricity" was my college textbook in my Power and Machines class. It explains motors pretty well. Also covers phase angle, inductive reactance and capacitive reactance. --Doozer

Don't know the answer to you hypothetical question. However you also live in an area once served by 2 phase power. How many here have heard of two phase power as it once existed?

How many here have a machine that's run by a two phase motor?

I have several books about motors, but the best seems to be Irving Gottlieb's book:

I think some of the best information (as well as the worst) can be found on-line and on YouTube. Also there are excellent technical application notes by Microchip and other companies who are in the motor control IC business.

Rosenberg and Hand is my favorite. Next is "Rotating Electric Machinery and Transformer Technology" by Donald Richardson. Rotating phase converters are covered (somewhat) and autotransformer phase converters are covered a bit, too. Available used, reasonably priced. (Abebooks.com is a good site to buy through, as is bookfinder.com). I may even have a spare copy around here somewhere.
