  • Firefox update a bust?

Firefox updated itself today, as evidenced by Zonealarm needing to be told about it again, but apparently it "broke itself" doing it.

Crashed 35 times, which I bothered with because I was so annoyed that I wanted to give them something to do...... Restarting the computer didn't fix it, I had to 'reset" it which fortunately worked.

never happened before, I assume someone messed up bigtime.

    Anyone else notice something odd?

Not yet - since they've gone to their very aggressive build/replace schedule I've quit updating every version. Too crazy.

I don't allow it to auto update, wait until a new version is a month or so old before I let it download. Never have any problems.

I am a FF beta tester and encounter few, if any, problems. What OS are you running?

                XP SP3.

It's been rock stable with FF for years, with never a function problem, up to whatever it did today. All other programs are fine as well.

I don't actually allow it to update, I set it not to, but it seems to have done it anyway. It used to seize "focus", pop up a window asking if it was OK to update, and then interpret any keystroke as an OK, which was irritating if you were typing something at the moment it popped the window. It doesn't do that anymore, but it does ask to update.

This time it apparently didn't ask. A prior update may have defaulted it back to "Microsoft mode", the mode where it is allowed to do anything anytime without asking.

Last time I allowed FF to update I regretted it. They took away the automatic appearance of the download window. I relied on that to cancel downloads that are bigger than I wish to use from my daily allowance. Now I have to remember to look by turning on the window. I use FF for Utube downloads because Chrome won't allow it.

I recently tried updating to IE 10 and it caused major system problems. Fortunately if you do it as an update you can revert back to IE9.

If I had know that I wouldn't have asked a serious question. It is much easier for me to generate SA answers (a God given gift that my Father and others didn't appreciate)

All kidding aside, which version of FF are you running and what specific problems are you encountering? I run into problems with "flash" causing FF problems.

How did you get adblocking on IE9? Can it be used on IE10?

                        For J Tiers:

What version of FF are you up to? Mine has been showing 20.0.1 for a while, and it says it's up to date.

Why, oh why does anybody allow anything to update automatically? Would you allow someone in your shop in the middle of the night adjusting tail stock center, maybe re-tramming your mill table, while you peacefully slept thinking all is right with the world? Not no, but Hell no.

When you apply an update, you need to be there, hopefully with a restore point in hand, in case things don't go exactly as planned. At least you have the benefit of knowing what caused the problem......the update. When you allow programs to wander willy nilly about the internet changing this, and changing that, how are you supposed to know Who shot Cock Robin in the morning when things crash, or don't work right?

Automatic Updates is a creation of Bill Gates that everybody picked up on as being a great feature of this "Automatically updating, evolving machine" that I don't have to worry about. Wrong!! Somebody, or something, creeping into your peaceful world in the middle of the night changing and twisting knobs is not my idea of built-in improvement. Like everything else in our carefully adjusted world, you need to be there when changes occur. Turn automatic updates off.......on everything on your computer, especially Windows, and I'll rate FF a close second.

20.0.1 is the current version. I am using the latest version of beta 21.0.
