Will the price of scrap metal go back up again to replace these?

12 guys could move the whole lot in about 4 hours by hand.

Yea, may take fork lifts and such, but you can bet it was done cheap and dirty, simply pull them out 1 by one and load some trucks. Bob_s is right, a small group could move them all in no time

Don't anyone tell the Governor of New York or the Mayor of NYC about this. They'll spend the next week passing new laws to ban the theft of M-16's.

"So Mugsy, Did you get the guns and ammo?"
"Yea Boss, I grabbed 20,000 rifles but they only had 15,000 bullets.
                  I done good, didn't I?"
"Mugsy, you idiot! These bullets don't fit these guns!"
I cut it twice, and it's still too short!

I bet there never were any guns. The writer offers no proof of their existence. Probably an insurance claim is being prepared.

This does have a smell to it. And I'm not sure if it belongs here.

This seems very Fast and Furious-ish to me. Seems real convenient they were not approached by anyone wondering what was going on.

Maybe they figured that with mountains of 7.62 x 39 in that part of the world, no one would want M-16s?

If you ever spend any time in the 3rd world you'll soon discover occurrences like this one are not rare. During my 2nd deployment we were anchored out in Subic Bay, PI and locals climbed the anchor chain and stole the mooring lines. We're talking 3 or 4 inch dia rope here and no one saw a thing including everyone who was on watch. Keep in mind this was on a US Navy ship.

BTW, I'm not trying to say nothing like this happens in the US or other industrialized countries, but when you have people existing on the equivalent of a US dollar a day some of them will seek out any way they can to put food on the table.

So, how does the State Department supply Syrian rebels without a paper trail?
