Ditto. Seeing these engines run is poetry in motion.

Back in 1947/48(?) my father took me to see a railroad travel show on Chicago's lake front. The different railroads had all their latest equipment on display.
I remember walking along side this one locomotive for what seemed like forever. Finally at the front was a simple little sign that said "Big Boy". I don't remember much else about that show but I do remember that engine.

My dad piloted Steam engines. I understand, (from listening to my dad) that the blacker the smoke the less efficient the engine is being run. If the heat isn't enough the cylinders "work water" which means the steam can have water droplets in it and can damage the cylinders. Water does not compress. When you see these engine smoking heavily, it is for the camera. Sometimes they will add oil or some other smoking agent for a good display. A good engineer and fireman will keep the black down for efficiency.
That being said, the RR's made a big thing out of diesel making the RR clean during the big switchover.
I like that this engine is being refitted and to be returned to service. I hope they manage to get or train engineers that will run the engine properly. There is no sound like a steamer chugging up a grade.

Come on now, that's not fair.....not counting the crooked politicians and the contractor hopefuls there are probably tens of Californians lined up to ride from Madera to Bakersfield. But wait.....there's more, after trillions of dollars in cost overages and years of court fights a semi working almost high speed rail system will run from S.F to L.A. with planned stops in major towns like Pixley, Earlymart, Keys and a few other booming metropolises.

I see it as a good thing, I mean just think how fast you'll be able to travel to your doctor under the finely tuned cost cutting advanced tech. obummer kare!
