  • Cross feed dial locking methods

    I am extending my crossfeed shaft and making some new dials for my SB9, so I figured it would be a good time to reconsider the locking method.

    Other than the standard "thumb screw in the dial" that bears down radially to the screw shaft, I have noticed two other locking mechanisms:

    I'd appreciate hearing others' experiences with these types of dial locks, ease of use, reliability etc.

    i made a dial 20 years ago and just put some thick grease between the dial and the "hub". its very smooth and still in use.

      My Harrison uses a grub screw, sping and brass pad bearing on the shaft.

      Look up 'damping grease' as a possible solution.

        I like this the best, as used by Rivett, between ease of machining, aesthetics, and ease of use. I have nothing but good experience with friction locked dials (such as grooving underneath the dial body and fitting a tight fitting o-ring) in use, but I do like the idea of being able to positively lock the dial without touching the dial itself.

          my colchester has something very similar to the Rivett as linked by Sun God but mine a "friction".

          if I'm not mistaken, there are a few more bits including a floating pin (piston),
          a spring, and set screw -- no thumbscrew, no postive locking. But the "drag" can be set quite
          high, and they haven't budged (worn, etc) since I set them.

          I'd we wary of an oring losing its feel quickly. I like the sound of damping grease though.

          ps: I meant to suggest something like a "split ring" (ala piston ring) perhaps?

            I like the friction type. My EMCO FB mill used a radial leaf spring under the dial. Worked well but might be tough to implement so a properly sized o-ring and groove might be next best. An important thing to consider is if the dial is used as a thrust surface, like on my Atlas/Craftsman lathe in OEM configuration. In that case a carrier of some sort should be worked up to provide the thrust function and the dial can ride on the carrier.

              The Monarch EE uses a tapered disk that bears against a mating taper. It's a tad overbuilt, but very effective. Here's a pic of my homebuilt repop. Unfortunately what is not shown is the inside friction disk. It is a thick disk with a mating outside taper to fit the movable inside graduated ring. This disk has a key that engages with the machined slot(pictured), to keep it from from rotating. There is a hardened pin on one side to keep the disk centered and then when the thumbscrew( again not pictured) on the outside face of the outside graduated ring is tightened, it bears against the disk and locks into the taper on the movable inside graduated ring. I hope this is clear. Sounds complicated but quite simple.
