How much grease?

So I have these plane bearings with little grease reservoirs for the rear axle. As shown in below picture. I am wondering how much grease should be put into them? Im thinking put the axle in place and try and fill the bottom half, leaving the top void? is that too much? too little?

Also, should the small vent holes seen in the picture (Picture is of top half of transmission) be filled with a little grease to prevent water getting in?

Lotta different greases out there, all of them gooey. Only needs to go where metal touches metal (and moves), like gears and bearing surfaces. Thick stuff, like automotive wheel bearing grease, won't fly off of fast rotating surfaces.

Yea Im talking about the 'cups' along the axle at the top of the transmission. the axle stays the same diameter and they seem to be for holding extra grease since if the grease is going to leak outta anywhere, its going to be out the output axles, so im wondering how much I should use?

Fill the cups, top off as needed.

Thicker greases...NLGI 2 and above will channel and won't wash into bushings etc. If that tranny has outboard seals like it looks like then my WAG would be a double 00 or triple 000 grease. This grade will flow slightly..it's almost like a gear lube. Snapper mowers used it for a bazillion years in their little gear reducers on the rear engined riders. Lots of folks search this grade out to fill manual steering boxes on old rigs as it won't run right out slightly worn bushings and seals.

I'll bet it would be easy to find the manufacturer and get a recommendation for a lube..I think it was mentioned that maybe that unit is a Peerless brand. Again..I would say no to any grease stiffer than a double 00..that's my take on it.

Well that is good because I bought 00 grease for it.

They went outta business a long time ago. Iv already bought the grease and slaped it on all the gears. I just wanna know how much to put into the little axle pockets.

Why not drill and tap it for zerks and grease till your heart is content?

Fill the pockets up. The lubricating portion of the grease, the oil, will slowly leak out of the carrier and lubricate the axle/housing surface.
If this was a high speed transaxle things would be much different as it is possible to over-lubricate such a gearbox and have it over heat due to fluid friction, whether it be grease or oil.

Peerless Tecumseh used to recommend bentonite grease for these.
Any #00 would probably work.

If the tiny holes are for venting, I'd not zerk them. Fill the lower pocket half with the grease you settle on and use a needle tip on the gun to grease through the "vent holes" periodically.
