Specifically addressing the concern of concealing the join... if you make the join at one of the corners, then attach piping to all the corners, it will effectively be invisible. As others have indicated, you'll likely run into other challenges as well.

I've recently made a speaker/amp and wrapped it in vinyl (tolex) Turned out to be an easy job. there are lots of clips on you tube about it. This one is particularly good
