I think the biggest difference between trying to share information (teach) on the internet and through forums like this versus doing it in person is that the "old school" methods relied mainly upon the facial expressions and voice inflections that you simply cannot get with words printed on a computer screen. In this platform you take someone who may be "hard to read" and make it absolutely impossible. Even emoticons cannot always deliver an accurate "feeling" to what is written.

Yes, I agree with BF that many teachers are poorly trained themselves. Some people can learn well from what is written, some learn better & easier from what they hear. All learn best from what they DO. A teacher's role is to get a student asking the right questions and learning ways to find answers. Old school teachers were more inclined to have a "watch how I do this and do it like me" attitude. In the world of work many were so insecure they wouldn't "show everything" for fear the younger/newer person could get better at it than them. Personally, I can do without that crap. The very best teachers I've had were ones that let me make mistakes as long as I was learning from them, and gave a deserved "attaboy" when earned.

That said, I'd like to believe that I'm a better teacher in person than I could ever be in words typed here. In this platform I am a perfectly pompous jerk and BF recognizes that we are on the same page.

You know your trade that is obvious. By uneducated I am not referring to your metal working education. The meaning goes to the ability to convey the knowledge that some Old School types lack but of course that is only my opinion. I am not talking about spelling or grammar actually. The reference goes to how to teach a skill. I personally know many people that are great at what they do, weldors, horse trainers, business men but they can't teach what they know. They can do the job but not teach the skills necessary to do the job. The problem is when they are put in a position to have to teach someone to do their job. I also know people that aren't really great at their job but can teach others to do the job in such a way that the student surpasses the teacher.

That is what I am referring to as uneducated and I maybe used the wrong term. Maybe I should have said most Old Schoolers are piss poor teachers!

My point is that all the people here have a lot of knowledge to contribute and we should appreciate them for doing so. Different people have different sets of knowledge and skill. some of us can weld expertly and some, like me, can not. Some can cut a gear in record time. Other will wind up with missing teeth. And some can write with the best of them and others can not. We need to appreciate each for the knowledge and skills that he or she does have and not try to put them down for areas where they are not as polished.

I try to write properly so that I can be understood better. And I am somewhat of a perfectionist in everything that I do, many times too much so. And I do make mistakes, sometimes silly ones.

Apparently, I failed in that post.

Side story: I once worked under an assistant manager who made frequent spelling and grammatical errors in his writings. He would post notes on the department BB and everyone would mark up those errors and correct them. I once asked him about why he put up with that and his answer was, well, they WERE reading them. It was so true, a properly composed note on that same board would be completely ignored while his were always completely known to all concerned. His method of being sure the word got out. And it worked.

So, if writing like a third grader is so OK with you, why do you take the time to explain how carefully you work to avoid doing so?

I (not we) also enjoy reading about the new and old ways of accomplishing a task. What I don't enjoy is the look down your nose at anyone who isn't old school or isn't willing to take a load of crap just to learn something. It is the uneducated Old School types that hang on to how they were taught like Old Hat that is distasteful to me. Usually they think that because they are really good at what they do everyone around them has to put up with their hollering, cussing and tantrums. That some how their hardness adds to their position. I say get a life and join the real world. Those times are over. The world has moved on to a more knowing manner of conveying knowledge for the most part.
