pre-"rookie"

I am what you would call a pre-"rookie" in htat I'm a journeyman welder who would sure like to learn how to run a lathe and maybe a milling machine. What I was hoping is that maybe some of you guys could give me some ideas on books I could get to get me started.
I'd like to do the school thing but responsibilities won't allow for that. I have access to an old lathe at work so that's where I'd like to start. I can read prints, mics and verniers and can fabricate so I'm hoping that'll give meabitof a leg up.

A good book to get you started on that old lathe would be South Bend's "How To Run a Lathe". Lee Valley Tools sells a reprint of the 35th ed. of this book for about $7. http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.asp?page=44905&category=1,160,42562&abspag e=1&ccurrency=1&SID=

Just remember to treat them with the fear and respect that power tools deserve (never get too comfortable) while operating them. Always follow all the safety rules. Double check your setups for safe rotation by hand and insure everything is tight.
