  • Surface plate gloat

I didn't need a surface plate and wasn't actually looking for one, but when one came up while trying out DoctorDoctor's ebay search technique I couldn't resist. It's a 12"x18"x4" Grade A Starrett Pink, and aside from the chip shown in the pic is in great shape. List is somewhere around $400 and the guy was asking $175. Thing is, he wasn't willing to ship it so I figured he'd take less from someone local and offered $50. We ultimately agreed on $70 and I drove all of 10 minutes to go pick it up.

Not bad at all, and hopefully my wife doesn't use it as a tombstone for me after finding out I bought it.

nobody in here should be whining until they run the (a,e,i,o,u) ebay search themselves and then discover there is nothing cool near THEM.

            and then they can whine.

              "I didn't need a surface plate"

That statement is patently false. Everyone requires at least one surface plate, more is better. If nothing else, they excel at preventing the workbench top from floating away.

Congrats. I picked up three grade A plates a few months ago for $100, but they are in rougher shape. Jury is still out on whether it will constitute a gloat until I make some room and clean them up.

btw.....What is this secret search technique? I must have missed it.
