Here is the obituary that ran in the local paper:

    MATHIAS, Steven Boyd
    7 September, 1954 ο 14 May, 2014
Steve was born in Logan, Utah. He
grew up in Kansas City and southern
California and lived most of his adult
life in northern California. He graduated
from the University of the Pacific, in
Stockton, with a degree in engineering.
He worked as an engineer in
    manufacturing most of his career.
Steve was an avid outdoorsman, riding
his bike tens of thousands of miles and
spending many happy days hiking and weeks off-trail backpacking in
the high Sierra. He travelled in Asia, Africa, North and South
America, and Europe. Steve volunteered extensively during his
lifetime, especially for Habitat for Humanity and the California State
Railroad Museum. His life remained full during four years of
retirement. Steve was a skilled craftsman who could design and
build just about anything made of wood or metal in his home
workshop. Steve will be remembered for his problem-solving
abilities, quirky sense of humor, eccentric recycling tendencies, and
eagerness to help others fix things. He was very generous with his
    time and abilities.
Steve died at age 59 of urachal cancer at his home in Elk Grove. He
is survived by his wife of 23 years Darlene DuBois Mathias; his
mother, Roberta Heywood Mathias; sister, Terri Shaver; and
brothers, Mark Mathias and Bill Funkhouser, as well as many other
beloved family members and friends. Memorial gifts can be made to
    Sacramento Habitat for Humanity.

Always hate to see these notices, though they are inevitable. Do you know what name he went by here? His actual name does not ring a bell for me. Was this someone you knew personally?

    Condolences in any event.

That link was to our site, not that other one. His user name was sbmathias and I'm sure many will recognize it.

          Steve, thanks for posting this.

My fault! I just scroll down the favorites and don't think about the URL name. Better than a "Like" button would be a filter preventing links to that "other place" from being posted.

                Sorry for the derail.

Steve was a real nice guy and planned out one of the local HSM events to a railyard about 3 years ago.
We conversed several times in the interim. Sad to hear of this.

Sad indeed. Hits home as we were born on the same day in different continents.

I'm a bit embarrassed that I did not connect the name with the screen name. I should have.
                      Thanks guys.

RIP Steve. Way too young. Born on the exact same day as my wife. Condolences to his family.
