      [QUOTE=J Tiers
      Every barber I have gone to has trimmed the edges with a straight razor. Around the ears, sideburns, and back of the neck. Them'uns musta all had licenses, eh?[/QUOTE]

      The license is for the bag they have to give you to carry your head in.

        Trimming the edges? around here I haven't seen a straight razor used for decades! Never on me.

        If it wasn't for complaining woman, I probably wouldn't bother to shave.

          I use electrics and have some hairs that are so thick they won't fit through the screen and have to be plucked,,, (and go in about 1/3" and make me bleed when pulled out...

          Im just glad nobody's chimed in yet about storing their blades in a plastic pyramid --- then we would have had problems...

                  I remember my dad 'sharpening' a double edge Gilette razor blade by setting it inside a round waterglass and rubbing it back and forth around the inside curve with his thumb. I was far too young to shave then, and I don't know how effective it was, but I remember him doing it.

                    For about the last two years I've made it a practice to vigorously wash my face with soap and hot water prior to shaving; previously I would just soak my face with a hot, wet wash cloth.
                    Frankly, I can't tell that it made a bit of difference, either in the closeness or comfort of the shave, or in extending the life of the razor.

                    I use the Schick Quattro, four bladed disposable razor, which I really like, other than the clogging that sometimes occurs. Typically I'll get about 3 months' use before it starts dragging and feeling dull.

                    I've been seeing a TV ad, done by a guy on one of the Pawn Shop programs, touting one of the old style double edge type razors. That would eliminate the issue with the clogging, as in the multi-blade arrangement. Anybody here use those? Has the grinding/sharpening technology for double edge blades improved in recent years?

                      Double edge blades are sharp as all hell. Feathers are said to be the sharpest and you won't get them at walmart, but there are tons of options available online.
                      And they aren't expensive at all, I spent $10 on a sampler pack of different brands 2 years ago, I still have half of them left. I'll never spend money on a disposable again.

                        I remember a shop in London that specialised in shaving, they sold all sorts of razors, but the best seller of the straight razors was the lagoule "singing" razor, that was one sharp beast!, and expensive.
                        They had a cutthroat shaving competition there, they looked for volunteers to be speed shaved, I couldn't imagine sitting in that chair!

                          I find that scissors used once a month or so are all that are needed to control facial hair. Razor blades are far too useful in the workshop to be wasted in the bathroom.

                            Well I guess I the most foolhardy, wasteful one among us because I use the latest 5-blade from Gillette and LOVE the close shave I get. Yes, I have used single-edge, double-edge and others, but nothing has ever given me the comfortable close shave I get now. I change the (uber expensive) blade cartridge about once every 3 months. It doesn't ever clog up on me either.

                              Entirely on topic to HSM. Italian master makes straight razors. Great technique and methodical approach, wonderful shop.

                                Kinda dragging this out but I started out 50 some years ago with an electric. I think I shaved so hard I had my hair become in grown. Changed to the cheapest 10 or 20 throwaway pack sold. Still use them in the shower. I do have to admit though that I shower only for about 10 minutes and shave near the end. The throw a ways last me about two months. Wayne.
