            I'd give him an F for anything to do with teaching. He talks like the old Tobacco Auctioneer from radio days. Mouth going a mile a minute and. Couldn't understand a word he was saying. :-(

                    ROFLMAO, he's Mr. Wizard on steroids. I watched some of his videos and he is a good dead pan comedian as well.

                        Just FYI, he fleshed out the details of the circuit diagram at his website.

                        Seems D1 is a bidirectional TVS diode.... I don't suppose a pair of Zener diodes in common cathode or anode configuration would suffice? Building one would amuse me so long as it's parts from the junk pile or Radio Shack (which is closing and currently 50% off list), and that is the only bit I'm missing.
