I have used it on my computer, but on one of the web pages I did get a warning from McAfee that some harmful content was blocked. This should be OK:

    http://www.atube.me/video/download.html

There may be some counterfeit sites with malware, and it's not inconceivable that some of them could have been created by YouTube (probably part of the Google oligarchy) and promoted to come up high in their search engine.

Easiest way, one that keeps up with Youtube attempting to block this (it is against their terms of service), is to add "pwn" to the front of the URL.

eg, if you want, say: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fpbOEoRrHyU
you would edit it to say: pwnyoutube.com/watch?v=fpbOEoRrHyU

And, you will get a page of the various sites that will allow you to download it. The people running pwnyoutube.com try to keep up with the blocking. Quick, easy to remember, and no plug-ins. Just 'pwn'.

On a Mac I use the QuickTime player app to capture videos from anywhere, not just youtube. This doesn't work with the Windows version. Apple can be so dense, sometimes.

There is a freeware utility called aTube Catcher. Works great. Also downloads music and converts videos between formats. Google it.
