  • If you're going to get a DRO for your mill, why you want a nice one...

    In reference to the title, I showed the results of using a "Smooth Arc" and "Linear Hole" programs of the DRO to make a part that has many radiuses and angles, "doable" on a manual mill. These are also the first parts I have made on the Bridgeport since acquiring it.
    The DRO in question is a "Ditron" that uses 5um glass scales. The DRO itself was 165$ including shipping from China, the glass scales are around 100$ an axis.
    Please, if you're thinking of buying those cheap DRO's that are based on Chinese Calipers, for a tiny bit more money, you can get a real DRO like what I used to do this.

    Agree, the Ditron is cheap and good, 1 um scales are also available.
    I have two of the 4 axis DRO,s, had a problem with one and that got replaced quickly under warranty

      I did not know that these (and probably others)
      DROs do step-point-path-curve features.
      That could be real handy in a non-cnc shop
      like mine. Thanks!!

        I don't know a lot about these DROs,...yet, I'm sure I will as I have a mill that could use one, I've been too busy to sort it, however I've finished bricklaying, bar the odd brick, I'm planning on getting a dro probably the same one as yourself, thanks for the write up, the functions look usefull, nice recovery after the inevitable mistake, we all make them, learning to undo them is the art, clearly you fixed it, the weld might have been lumpy but it was sound and not porous, that's going to be a heavy loco
        I grew up with steam but is it wrong to say I actually like diesels, perhaps I should go outside and beat myself but I prefer a diesel locomotive,

          The DRO is truly amazing for the price and it feels solid. There is a US importer for it, http://www.drokits.com. His version is very slightly different than mine and is more expensive than ordering it from China direct, but I cannot beat his prices on glass scales vs direct from China.

            Is this some kind of measurement? , I've never seen this (µm)before.
            Resolution: 10µm, 5µm, 1µm, 0.5µm, 0.1µm
            Definition: Boat, a hole in the water you throw money into!

                  1 um is 0,000039 inch

                    1um is .0001 mm(or is it .001mm?). The Chinese crappy calipers show .05mm, just a tad bit better
                    I use 5um scales, and the DRO show a resolution of .0002" More than enough for my worn Bridgeport. If I had it on the lathe, I would use a 1um scale on the cross slide.
                    The DRO is nice because you can use different resolution scales for each Axis, can specify it if they are linear or rotary encoders(works with both) and specific how many digits you see on the DRO.

                      Just tryed inch on my Ditron with 1 um scales it has a resolution of 0,00004 inch

                        I think(sometimes) that it's the lowercase mu/u confusion ie u with a tail, mu's and u 's confusion, I get what the OP meant as I can't be bothered to use the correct symbol either, there are a few I get stuck with, squared, ie superscript, subscipt for chemical equations and a host of others, used to be alt and the code but modern dodahs like iPads, who knows?
