  • OT Job Gloat

My boss called me into the office this afternoon. Told me that effective yesterday I was getting a buck an hour raise. Given how tight things have been around here and even basic supplies are beeing cut back that's significant. He told me they were real pleased with the work I was doing and wanted to "thank" me. Wow! That feels real good considering some of my past work experiences. My first pattern shop job was not positive and the forman had a reputation for being a jerk, especialy to apprentices. I left there wondering if I was capable of being a pattern maker. Well I guess now I know!

Congrats! I'm just curious. Did you ask, or did he come up with this idea on his own? If he did, it seem he's a pretty smart guy.

I asked about it when I got my review. He told me the company has a policy of not discusing raises in conection to reviews which seems daft to me. But at the time he told me he was already working on it but it would have to wait a little bit so there would be a little time between the review and the raise. So the short answer is he got it for me of his own accord. I wasn't expecting a buck/hr though. Seems most raises are significantly less. Guess that's the difference between a payscale raise and a preformance raise. My boss has a real reputation for being a hard ass (or so the older guys tell me) but I'll be the first to admit that I've never worked for a more supportive supervisor. He comes and gets me just to show me something interesting and encourages me to try to accomplish the same task in a variety of different ways. As long as I get the job done, I can go about it any way I want. That's very rare in my experience. All he asks is we keep working until the buzzer goes off and not hang out by the time clock waiting for it. Fine by me, but it pisses off the guys in the parking lot I've blocked in who've already changed and are in their cars at 2:31. Too bad.

                    Congratulations!

A good work ethic can go a long way. Maybe your boss is only a hard ass to the guys that need a hard ass boss.

Sushi? I think that's what I call bait.

Anyone remember Sam 'n Ella's Bait Shop and Sushi Bar? (Say "Sam 'n Ella" a couple of times if you don't get it immediately.) I can't remember where I heard about it. Maybe some radio comedy show.

                          David-
Congratulations on a job well done. I am sure it is well deserved.

Also - a comment on your previous job. Often, during tough times, a company knows well in advance when it will have to let some people go. Some bosses don't have as much backbone as they should. They handle the situation by making people feel that they are doing poorly when they are not. The boss hopes that some will leave. Just be very happy you have found a better place to work.

                            Congratulatons.

Everyone complains, very few compliment. When they do, it really means something. You must be an excellent worker. Keep it up!

                              Congratulations Dave!

"Sam 'n Ella" sounds like something from Clik 'n Clak, the CarTalk guys. (I love their radio show. Seldom miss it.) Their list of credits at the end includes such names as Hugh Jass, their seat cushion tester, and several other such.
