This may be somewhat garbled, but I think it's the basic idea:
Sakai's main business was never home shop machinery. In fact, it was a money-losing sideline that happened to be a pet project of the CEO/owner/founder/whatever he was. The CDO/owner/founder/whatever died/retired/left/whatever, and the bean coutners immediately decided "this is a really dumb thing for this compnay to be doing" and pulled the plug, pretty much overnight.
