    I'd have a lot of questions for that much money Dave. Notice the tail of another lathe in the picture. does this mean he's selling the worse of the two?

      A LOT more lathe than a SB9, looks to be original with a taper atachment and lightly used according to the photos. I don't know what lathes like this are routinley going for in the industrial heartland, but around here at that price (yea, yea I know it'll go up) I'd be going to check it out in a heartbeat. The only thing that raises any concern at the moment is the bronze color on the gears, but that might be a specular reflection.

        The color to me made think of a grease...theres a wheel bearing grease that is that color

                Slightly OT newbie question...What is the purpose of the crank in the base cabinet?

                  I'm not a SB user so this is only a guess: This is an underdrive unit so the cabinet under the headstock houses the motor. The lever may be for tensioning/untensioning the belt for speed changes.

                      That looks like the small S'bends used in the Tech School classes I took a few yrs ago, and that's what the crank was for.
                      What I'm confused by is the description comment "...(6) Back gears included..". It has a Q.C. gearbox, where do the extra gears come into play? The one's I used were put into a backgear range without swapping any gears. In the classes I took I preferred using the 13" S'bends, so only used the smaller ones a time or two. But for a homeshop application they'd be real a real 'honey' to have.

                      Hmmm, after looking at that bottom pict w/gear cover removed..., maybe I'm confusing the backgear operation of the 10" with those 13" lathes.

                        I have the exact machine in my home shop, less the taper turning attachment, and it's perfect for what I do. I don't understand his 'back gear included' comment either. Yes, the handle on the left cabinet door is for the flat belt tension. It's designed to allow the door to be opened only when the belt tension is released. If it's really as good as it looks, that's a sweet machine for a home shop.

                          I suspect by "back gears" he means the extra change gears for driving the lead screw/gearbox. I sure wouldn't kick that lathe out of bed for making chips.

                            I assume you mean for such as converting to metric feeds, and other threads not otherwise provided on the standard gears.

                              Thats what it's for. The newer version it's on the side close to the back. It's connected to the top cover so the top cover cant be opened when there is tension on the belt. I like the old way better.
