    Stoning off or filing off the center punch is a bad idea. All you do is making the center punch smaller and harder to pick up. If you file or stone it off than all you have left is a little mark that is very hard to pick up with a small drill. If you have a small center punch from a transfer punch than take a regular hand held center punch, pick it up and enlarge it by hitting it hard.

      Yes, but if the prick was done at a slight angle, the crater will send the small drill off the mark.

      Following up with a good punch depth is to be advised.
