This is near my hunting camp. At Rockland there was a copper mine with a natural air compressor at the Old Victoria Mine that ran for years after the mine closed & it was filled in. http://www.exploringthenorth.com/oldvictoria/mine.html

We were up at Victoria Dam a few years back. Saw some pipes coming from the ground just down stream from the dam. I never knew I was in the presence of that awesomely simple and powerful air compressor until I got home and did some Googling about the dam and mine.

I see you're from Hurley. 10 years ago I looked at some housed in Ironwood, MI & couldn't believe the low prices! I could have bought a nice little "Grandmas" house complete with linens, silverware & all for $6k. About 1200 sf, new steam boiler heat, 3BR, nice workshop in full basement, 1 car garage & shed in the back with an ally. Wish I'd have bought it now. I applied for the airport managers job there too. Nice town & area too.

When I was a kid in Erie Pa, my dad took me to the city water pumping station to watch the Cornish pump in action. I wonder what ever became of it? Probably ended up in a scrap yard.

During WWII, there was preliminary thinking that maybe the Michigan Cornish engine should be scrapped to support the war effort. Fortunately, that didn't happen.

There was talk of opening up an iron mine to start work again.

Yes there is, but good luck getting a mine developed in these times.
