    the spindle brake should be the up position on the clutch control rod.

    Good point. Miner, are you sure it has a threaded spindle and not D1-6?

    Low gear it is. I am afraid this chuck has been on there for a long time.
    Looks like a spindle brake is going to be a project.

    Sorry if it sounds obvious, but did you try setting the gears to the lowest speed before trying to unscrew the chuck?

    Make an expanding plug that fits the spindles through hole so you have a way of grabbing the spindle.
