Re: PiM/MW August, 1995 article about a shop-made shaper titled "Zippy".

Anyone know if drawings were ever published or a construction article? I've searched here, YouTube, Google and not found it.

I just had a look through our archives and nothing further was printed by us about the shaper described in the article.

However, the design of the shaper is from Dave Gingery and his book is still available from Gingery Publishing:

The article only covers some modifications the author made to Dave's design. Between the Gingery book and the article you should be all set.

Like George said. This book. There are some great reading materials in the rest of the various series also. They are inexpensive and dont take up much space.

Some folks dont like them but to each his own I happen to enjoy them. After all, they are meant to be for US, Homeshop Machinists.. JR

How many total books are there in the series? I enjoyed reading the one above from cover to cover, but it only covers 7 books. Dave Gingery was a genius.

Dave Gingery inspired my interest in machine work. The books are an easy read and give you some real good ideas on how different machine tools work. Also, just as important, they teach you the order of operations in which things need to assembled.

Some day, if I ever get out of my apartment and I have shop space, I'll build his shaper.

Those looking to buy the book might want to act quickly. Latest Gingery ad (MW, of course!) states many titles will not be reprinted once existing stock is sold.

There was a construction article series, of an improved version of the Gingery shaper published, in HSM some years ago. Instead of castings it was made out of steel and iron and other bits. If you can get a hold of the articles it would be a better build then the original.
